Two wildfires burning in Mount Taylor Ranger District

One fire, the Diener Canyon Fire, initially began as a prescribed burn in the Zuni Mountains on Monday in Cibola County. However, it broke out of its containment zone. It's burning about 15 miles west of Grants and Milan and has no containment.

The second fire, dubbed the Bluewater Fire, has prompted pre-evacuation notices for people in Bluewater Acres and Bluewater Village. That fire also has no containment as of Thursday night.

McKinley County Fire Chief Jason Carlisle said the U.S. Forest Service had initially asked for an evacuation plan around 5:45 p.m. Thursday afternoon for Bluewater Acres. That order was rescinded around 6:35 p.m. because, Carlisle said, the fire shifted to the northeast.

However, emergency personnel say residents should still be ready to evacuate if needed.

A Type I incident management team will arrive at a command post on Friday.

In southeast New Mexico, Capitan Police Chief Randy Spear tells KOB a fire that broke out Thursday afternoon has grown to 1,000 acres and is threatening structures. Lincoln County agencies are assisting New Mexico State Forestry in responding to the fire.

State Forestry also reports a 60,000-acre fire burning between Tatum and Milnesand.
