VANCOUVER – Crews are making some progress containing two of three major wildfires that have forced evacuations in three regions of of BC.
The wildfire service says the 27-square kilometre Allie Lake blaze northwest of Kamloops is now 35 per cent contained. Guards are up around 25 per cent of the five-square kilometre Xusum Creek wildfire west of Lillooet.
But the nearly 170-square kilometre Tommy Lakes fire northwest of Fort St. John is still out of control, seven days after it was sparked by lightning.
The BC Wildfire Service says firefighters dropped 900,000 litres of fire retardant and suppressant on wildfires from the sky in one day — all in an effort to fight those three wildfires. The agency says it’s unusual to see fires this aggressive so early in the season.
Crews hope the expected rain and cooler temperatures aren’t accompanied by strong winds.
Several new fires have been reported in the last 24 hours, including a 1.5-square kilometre blaze near Savona, west of Kamloops. There is also a small but fierce blaze outside Oliver.
