Utah wildfires increase challenges for local sport scene

SPANISH FORK, Utah (AP) — A pair of wildfires in Utah County that forced hundreds of families to evacuate their homes and created poor air quality has thrown a major wrench in the local high school sport season.

The Daily Herald reports Salem Hills chemistry teacher, athletic director and girls soccer coach Lee Gillie says he had girls who were living in Heber City or in Salt Lake City and thus weren't able to make it to school or practices.

Gillie says families were split up due to the Pole Creek and Bald Mountain blazes. He remembers one girl was staying on the sofa at a sibling's house, but had to share it with a brother and sister.

Gillie says the need to evacuate quickly meant that many of his players had limited clothing options.
