Residents recently affected by wildfires preparing for mudslides, flooding - - KUSI

LOS ANGELES (KUSI)- Heavy rains in Malibu are forcing closures on the Pacific Coast Highway. Areas affected by the massive Holy Fire last summer are under mandatory evacuations as residents are bracing for possible flooding and mudslides.

Today Caltrans crews and all their heavy equipment are on standby — jumping in quickly to clear the roads.

More than 100 lightning strikes were reported as the storm moved into beach communities.

The danger caused LA County lifeguards to shut down Zuma beach and to urge everyone to stay away from beaches until the storms pass.

With even more heavy rain heading this way, Malibu property owners were warned early to make sure private drainage areas were cleared.

To the south in nearby riverside county, mandatory evacuations were issued for the Holy Fire burn area.

Riverside County Sheriff deputies went door to door warning residents who live near the holy fire burn area it’s time to go.

While some neighbors say they’re tired of leaving their homes, others aren’t taking any chances.

Emergency officials say any amount of rain could lead to mudslides and debris flow. They urge people to take the evacuation notices seriously.
