Preparing for this year's wildfire season - KSN-TV

SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) - Kansas fire departments respond to thousands of wildfires every year.

During Wildfire Awareness Week, fire officials want residents to prepare for the upcoming wildfire season.

"Right now, this time of year, there's a lot of dead and dry vegetation on the ground," explained Capt. Tony Tracy, with Sedgwick County Fire District. "In the springtime it'll green up, but right now there's a lot of dry, dead vegetation on the surface which is easily ignitable."

This year's wildfire season is projected to have an earlier start, with a slight increase in fire weather events in southwest and central Kansas, according to fire officials.

In Sedgwick County, fire crews fought around 160 wildfires last year.

Tracy said crews are prepared year-round for wildfires.

"All of our people are thoroughly trained in how to fight wildland fires, running grassfires and the like. But again, it's really about compliance," said Tracy.

During this time of year, local fire departments issue numerous burn permits. Officials want to remind people, if they're applying for a permit, to pay attention and read the permit regulations.

Tracy added that majority of the grassfires crews respond to are located off the highways.

What is the main culprit of the grassfires? Cigarettes.

"Don't discard any smoking material," said Tracy.

If you live in a rural area, these tips can increase your wildfire safety:

  • Keep surrounding vegetation at a low level
  • Mow and water your lawn
  • Discard any debris or trash near your home
  • Remove pine needles and leaves from the roof and gutter
  • Avoid hot work (welding, cutting, etc) near dry areas
