California wildfires, Trump makes first presidential visit to Chicago: 5 things you need to know Monday - USA TODAY

Former deputy national security adviser expected to testify in impeachment inquiry

Charles Kupperman, the former deputy national security adviser who left the White House in September, is expected to testify Monday in Week 6 of the House impeachment investigation. But it’s not clear if Kupperman will appear for the private depositions before the three key committees investigating Trump's dealings with Ukraine. He filed a federal lawsuit Friday asking a judge to decide whether he should obey the president's order not to testify or the House's subpoena to appear. The chairmen of the three committees wrote Kupperman a letter Saturday saying the lawsuit was meritless and warning that his defiance of the subpoena could be evidence of contempt. The three said the deposition would start on time and he should be there.

Calif. wildfires prompt evacuations, power outages

Historic winds have fueled an explosion of wildfires in the San Francisco Bay Area, prompting evacuation orders for close to 200,000 Northern California residents and power outages for an estimated 2.3 million people. The blaze has now grown to 54,298  acres and was only 5% contained as of Sunday evening, forcing authorities to impose mandatory evacuations for 180,000 residents in Sonoma County, best known for its wine production. California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a statewide emergency as the extreme weather conditions significantly heightened the risk of wildfires. The winds are expected to last until Monday, the National Weather Service said.

Trump to make first presidential visit to Chicago

President Donald Trump is expected to make his first presidential visit to Chicago on Monday amid an impeachment inquiry in Washington and an ongoing teachers strike in the Windy City. Trump is scheduled to attend a fundraiser in the morning hosted by Todd Ricketts, Cubs co-owner and Republican National Committee Finance chairman. Later, he will speak at the largest annual gathering of law enforcement leaders in the world, the International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference. Trump often ridicules Chicago for how its leaders handle gun violence. In a January 2017 interview with ABC, Trump compared Chicago to Afghanistan: "Afghanistan is not like what's happening in Chicago."

Mass. deadline to rewrite vaping ban expires

The one-week deadline for Massachusetts to rewrite a controversial temporary ban on the sale of all vaping products is Monday. In a written order, Suffolk County Superior Court Judge Douglas Wilkins questioned components of the four-month ban issued Sept. 24. He said the ban can only remain if the commonwealth addresses the problems, noting that halting it immediately would "contravene the public interest." The judge said the state must hold a public hearing, as required by state law, so affected vape shops and others can weigh in, and provide a fiscal impact to businesses. Additionally, the order covering nicotine products must be resubmitted as an emergency regulation.

'Joker' leads box office again, estimates show

"Joker" is No. 1 again, at least according to Sunday's studio estimates. Todd Phillip's R-rated comic-book hit regained the top spot at the weekend box office in its fourth week of release, narrowly besting "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil." The sensation starring Joaquin Phoenix took in $18.9 million in ticket sales over the weekend. That came in just above the $18.5 million haul for Disney's "Maleficent" sequel, which slid to second after a disappointing No. 1 debut last weekend of $36 million. With such a close race at the top between "Joker" and "Mistress of Evil," the order could switch when final figures are released Monday.
