A stretch of Interstate 70 in Eagle County was closed Thursday evening by a wildfire.
Eastbound lanes are closed in both directions from Wolcott to Avon, according to the State Patrol. Structures were threatened by the fire.
The westbound lanes of the highway reopened at Avon about 6:45 p.m. The fire and subsequent road closure, for safety reasons, caused long traffic delays. Eastbound lanes reopened at about 9 p.m., according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
On Wednesday, areas of Eagle County below 9,000 feet in elevation were on red flag fire warnings, according to the sheriff’s office. Fire restrictions were issued in Eagle County on Wednesday.
Authorities urged drivers to avoid the area Thursday night if possible. There were no reports of injuries or structures burned.
