The Dallas Stars have fired head coach Jim Montgomery, effective immediately.
In a statement, Stars GM Jim Nill said “The Dallas Stars expect all of our employees to act with integrity and exhibit professional behavior while working for and representing our organization. This decision was made due to unprofessional conduct inconsistent with the core values and beliefs of the Dallas Stars and the National Hockey League.”
Rick Bowness, who has served as assistant coach since June of 2018, will serve as interim head coach.
Texas Stars head coach Derek Laxdal will be added to Bowness’ staff as an assistant coach.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman unveiled a league-wide multi-point plan yesterday on how the league will better combat personnel conduct. This comes in the wake of former NHL player Akim Aliu alleging that former Calgary Flames coach Bill Peters previously directed racial slurs toward him while in the minor leagues a decade ago. Multiple reports say Montgomery’s firing is not related to this issue.
Another source familiar with the situation says the Dallas Stars really had no choice and also says this is non abuse related. https://t.co/RzHHC26icp

Rick Bowness will be the sixth Stars coach — in either a full-time or interim role — since 2011, joining Marc Crawford, Glen Gulutzan, Lindy Ruff, Ken Hitchcock and Jim Montgomery.
TSN hockey insider Bob McKenzie said Wednesday morning on TSN 1040 Vancouver that the Stars are fortunate to have a coach like Bowness already on staff.
“He’s a really good coach and he’s done a really good job in a lot of different places,” McKenzie said. "And he’s got a wealth of NHL experience. To go through a traumatic thing like losing your head coach at a time when the team’s playing, for the most part, quite well and the record’s quite good, it’s a real benefit to have a guy like Rick Bowness in place. And Derek Laxdal has got a world of experience too in the Western Hockey League and obviously in the minor pros.”
Both the Cowboys and Mavericks have had one head coach during that span.
The Dallas Stars officially named Jim Montgomery as the 23rd head coach in franchise history and the eighth since the team moved to Dallas in May of 2018.
The Stars went 43-32-7 in Montgomery’s only full season as a coach, finishing fourth in the central and losing in the second round of the playoffs to eventual Stanley Cup Champion St. Louis in 7 games.
This season, the Stars started off 1-7-1 but have gone 16-4-2 in the 22 games that have followed.
Prior to joining the Stars, Montgomery coached Denver for five seasons, earning a 125-57-26 record during that span. He led the Pioneers to a national championship in 2017. He also won a national championship as a player with the University of Maine in 1993.
Montgomery, 50, signed a four-year contract in 2018 worth $6.4 million.
Nill and Bowness will meet with the media at 11 a.m.

I’m told the NHL was aware of the situation with Jim Montgomery even before Gary Bettman met the media here last night to announce the league’s 4-point plan, but that Montgomery’s dismissal does not fall under the auspices of that plan. Not related to it apparently.

Having flashbacks to Ron Washington's ambiguously abrupt dismissal.

Strange story from Stars to start the day. Whatever comes out, Monty did nice job in short time here, had team playing hard when it counted in May last spring. https://t.co/0y0OWl4nsr

Last night, at the Board of Governors meeting, we asked if there were any investigations underway for abuse/racial comments that we were not aware of. The answer was no. Whatever happened with Jim Montgomery in Dallas, it does not fall under that umbrella.
