According to fire officials, crews were called around 4 a.m. to the 400-block of 127th Street and immediately pulled two people from the home.
The man was transported to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, fire officials said. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The woman was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, fire officials said. She was in critical condition Sunday night.
Officials said they don't believe anyone else was inside the home at the time of the fire.
Family identified the two victims as husband and wife, Heural and Alfredda Glover.
Relatives said they were waiting on other family members to arrive from out of state Sunday so medical decisions could be made.
Fire officials confirmed there were no working smoke detectors in the home.
"I'm shocked. I'm shocked at what's happened here," said Fred West, the Glovers' neighbor.
A longtime neighborhood barber also said Heural Glover had been in the area for as long as he could remember.
"I'm sure he was here maybe even before I set up shop here in '83," Roy Madison said. "So that's how I met him. Coming to the shop here in '83, and he's been coming to the shop ever since."
It took about an hour for crews to extinguish the flames Sunday morning. No surrounding homes were damaged in the fire, officials said.
CFD is still investigating the cause of the blaze, but family members said it was electrical in nature.
