Firefighters spent hours Friday battling a four-alarm blaze that tore through a historic Concord mansion and destroyed the sprawling home.
Crews from multiple towns worked to bring the fire at 240 Fairhaven Hill Road, which broke out late Friday morning and raged into the afternoon, under control.
Flames ripped through colonial revival-style mansion built in 1897 for Charles Francis Adams III, a lawyer and former secretary of the U.S. Navy who was the great-grandson of the sixth United States president, John Quincy Adams, and the great-great-grandson of the second president, John Adams, according to Massachusetts historical records. The family referred to the estate as “Mount Vernon.”
The 6,508-square foot mansion was most recently valued at about $2.9 million, according to Concord property records.
Fire officials told reporters the home was a total loss.
The homeowners were not home when the fire broke out in the rear of the house and spread to the second and third floors. Those who were in the home at the time made it out safely, Concord Assistant Fire Chief Walter Latta told reporters.
He also described the issues crews had ferrying water to battle back flames at the remote estate.
“I know this is the holiday season and this is devastating, but the most important thing is nobody got injured,” Latta said.
