SAN JOSE — An 11-year-old girl has been credited with saving her family from a blaze early Thursday morning that quickly engulfed their home.

The girl was getting ready for school shortly after 6:30 a.m., according to San Jose Fire Department spokesperson Erica Ray, when she noticed smoke wafting into her room.

She ran into the living room, where she saw a small fire had started — and quickly sprang into action, waking up her parents and ushering her sister out of the home.

Fire crews responded to the call from the 800 block of 19th Street near East Mission Street at around 6:43 a.m., Ray said, where they found the small home on fire and worked to extinguish the flames.

The girl, identified as Berlin Gomez-Muniz by KRON 4 News, told several news outlets that she knew to sound the alarm thanks to watching the popular TV show “Chicago Fire.”

Because of the Gomez-Muniz’s quick thinking, Ray said, all five residents escaped the house uninjured — save the family cat, which was killed.

The fire’s cause was not immediately known, but Ray said it appears to have involved the family’s Christmas tree.

The family did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
