UPDATE: Authorities believe they know what caused Mason house fire - WILX-TV

MASON, Mich. (WILX) - Fire authorities say they believe they know what caused a house to catch fire in Mason Wednesday night leaving a family without a home.

The Mason Fire Chief gave an update Thursday, saying they think they know what started the fire, but won't make an official statement until the insurance company investigates.

Family and friends were at the home Thursday to gather what was left after the fire.

They didn't want to speak on camera but said a lot of community has offered to help them get back on their feet.

One local non-profit, Morgan's Hugs, said they were the first to the scene to give a helping hand.

Authorities were called to the home on Thurlby Road near Aurelius just after 5:30 p.m.

The Mason, Delhi, Eaton Rapids and Onondaga fire crews were all called to help put out the fire.

Authorities say five people lived in the home and only the mother was home at the time, she was able to make it out safely.

Authorities believe the fire started in and around a stove in the kitchen, however they say the mother was not cooking at the time.

"(The) kitchen had fire in it, a lot of smoke through the rest of the house, so we called Red Cross to assist them," said Mason Fire Chief, Kerry Minshall. "They do have a place to stay, but will not be living here for a while until they get it put back together and cleaned up."

News 10 had a chance to briefly speak with the mom, she didn't want to talk on camera but says she is doing okay.

She told News 10 the smoke detector is what saved her life, urging the public to make sure they had their fire detectors on and to make sure that their carbon monoxide detectors are working.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

The Mason fire chief says they will be back during the daytime on Thursday to investigate the scene.
