Klondike home destroyed overnight, fire department investigating second fire in the area - Journal & Courier

WEST LAFAYETTE – A family’s home in the Klondike area, just west of West Lafayette, has been destroyed in an overnight fire under investigation by the Wabash Township Fire Department.

The home on the 2200 block of Longspur Drive belonged to Lyle Janney and his wife, Heather Janney, where they lived with their child Jae. Lyle Janney said Heather Janney, a traditionally light sleeper, heard their doorbell ring and someone knock on the front door around midnight on Wednesday. When she went to answer the door, she saw “flickering,” and thought at first that one of their neighbors' houses had caught on fire.

But upon opening the door, she saw the fire in their front yard, which quickly spread to the rest of their house.

The family was able to get out safely and call 911, alerting the fire department, who arrived and put out the flames. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

The house has been “totally destroyed,” Lyle Janney said, with severe structural damage including the second floor of the house collapsing onto the garage that held one vehicle inside. Another vehicle, which was parked in the driveway, may have had some heat damage from the flames.

“The house appears to be completely at a loss,” Lyle Janney said.

Wabash Township Fire Chief Ed Ward said the department was dispatched to the scene at 12:05 a.m. and called for additional backup from the West Lafayette Fire Department. Crews were able to put out the flames and clear the scene by around 7 a.m., Ward said.

Firefighters were unable to locate the Janney's two cats inside the home.

A neighboring house was exposed to some of the fire, but Ward said firefighters were able to contain the fire to just the one home.

Ward said he was asking for any neighbors or others who may have pictures or videos of the fire to contact the Wabash Township Fire Department.

This is the second report of a large fire in the last week in the Klondike area. Early morning Dec. 30, Wabash Township Fire Department responded to a call of buses on fire in the Lafayette Limo parking lot, 2525 Klondike Road.

There were no injuries, but five out of the nine coach buses owned by the charter company were damaged, including Lafayette Limo’s only handicapped-equipped coach bus.

As of Wednesday, the cause of the Lafayette Limo fire is still under investigation by the Wabash Township Fire Department and the Indiana State Fire Marshal. A spokesperson for the Indiana State Fire Marshal said both fires are still under investigation, but there is currently no evidence the two fires are linked.

Anyone with additional information regarding the Lafayette Limo fire is asked to contact 800-382-4628.

What you can do

A PayPal account has been set up at galliendelile@gmail.com to contribute funds to help Lyle and Heather Janney in the aftermath of the fire. Funds donated will be used to buy clothes “beyond what the Red Cross supplies, any toiletries, gas money, etc.,” according to a Facebook post by Heather Janney.

Funds may also be used to replace the family’s things that were lost in the fire.

A Facebook group titled “Get Lyle and his family going again,” has been set up to provide additional support to the family.

“There’s been a huge outpouring of friends, and it’s been overwhelming more than anything else,” Lyle Janney said. “It’s a wonderful community that we're a part of, and we’re lucky to have a huge network of friends who have all been reaching out.”
