UPDATE | Name of firefighter killed in crash while responding to fire released - WSAZ-TV

ROANE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- UPDATE 1/11/20 @ 10:20 p.m.
The name of a firefighter killed in a crash Saturday has been released.

The city of Spencer says Mark Horwich died when his truck went off the side of Big Sandy Road near Newton, Roane County.

The crash happened around 2 p.m. Saturday while firefighters were responding to a structure fire. It completely crushed the cab of the firetruck and even knocked off a wheel.

Multiple fire departments, police agencies and ambulances were on scene for hours Saturday evening trying to figure out what caused the crash that killed Horwich.

A Spencer official says Horwich was a father and husband.

“His family, his fire department, and our community is devastated by the sudden tragedy,” officials said. “From all of us at the city of Spencer, we extend our sincerest condolences to the loved ones of Mark Horwich. You have our hearts.”

The city is asking flags be lowered to half staff starting Monday to honor Horwich.

“We are so grateful for our service personnel of all departments and are deeply moved by the loss of fireman Horwich in the line of duty,” the city said. “We acknowledge the danger you put yourselves in when the call for help goes out and appreciate your sacrifice. Again, our sincere condolences and sympathies.”

Governor Jim Justice tweeted condolences to the Clover Volunteer Fire Department and the firefighter's family.

"Our volunteer firefighters are some of the most incredible WVians we have, because they run toward danger to protect us – out of the goodness of their hearts. We lost one of these brave men tonight at the Clover VFD in Roane County. Cathy and I send our deepest condolences to his family and the entire community. We ask all WVians to join with us offering their prayers and support during this time of mourning."



UPDATE 1/11/20 @ 7:30 p.m.
Dispatchers confirm to WSAZ that a Roane County firefighter has died after a crashing while responding to a fire.

It happened around 2 p.m. Saturday on Amma Road in the Newton area.

Governor Jim Justice tweeted condolences to the Clover Volunteer Fire Department and the firefighter's family.

"Our volunteer firefighters are some of the most incredible WVians we have, because they run toward danger to protect us – out of the goodness of their hearts. We lost one of these brave men tonight at the Clover VFD in Roane County. Cathy and I send our deepest condolences to his family and the entire community. We ask all WVians to join with us offering their prayers and support during this time of mourning."

The firefighter's name has not been released.


UPDATE 1/11/20 @ 6:13 p.m.
The medical examiner has been called to the scene of a crash involving a fire truck in Roane County, according to dispatchers.

Dispatchers tell WSAZ the firefighter was responding to a structure fire when the truck crashed around Amma Road.

No names have been released. We have a crew headed to the scene.
