by Steve W Stewart, KJAS:
Burkeville Fire Chief Charles Duckworth on Wednesday said the department is eyeing a suspect in numerous suspicious wildfires that have occurred in one particular area.
According to Duckworth, about a dozen fires have occurred in the past year about a mile-and-a-half southwest of Burkeville in the area of Highway 87 at St John Road. Duckworth said the latest one occurred Tuesday night at that same location.
Fortunately, it’s a sparsely populated area with one home and a small church nearby.
Duckworth said if the suspect is caught in the act, or, if enough evidence is gathered to take the multiple arson cases to the Newton County Grand Jury, he plans to push for prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.
If you have any information about the suspicious fires near Burkeville, or any other arson cases, you can contact your local law enforcement agency or your local fire department. You don’t have to give your name.
