Insurance tips for everybody as wildfires burn

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (News4Utah) - Utah Insurance Department Commissioner Todd Kiser says the wildfires burning in our state -- including the Dollar Ridge Fire, which has left dozens of homes and structured burned -- serve as a reminder to be prepared.

"A terrible tragedy, a tough thing -- a hard thing for people to go through that," said Kiser.

He recommends all homeowners complete an invoice of their property now.

"Take pictures in every room -- take pictures in every closet," said Kiser.

"It's a policy holder's responsibility to prove their loss," he said.

Another piece of advice? Before disaster strikes, he says it's up to you to ask your insurance agent the tough questions.

"Don't assume that you have coverage," said Kiser.
