Eyewitness News Investigates: Would more logging help prevent wildfires?

As wildfires in California continue to break records for size, a debate has formed between the lumber industry and environmentalist groups about how best to limit fires.

Eyewitness News took multiple trips to the Sequoia National Forest north of Kernville to interview advocates on either side, as well as members of the Forest Service.

Those in the lumber industry say a steep decline in logging has led to dense forests full of dead trees that are susceptible to flames.

Environmentalists say logging only serves to make forest lands hotter and dryer, with more sunshine allowing for the growth of additional grasses, which accelerate fires.

The United States Forest Service is in charge of existing policy. The federal government uses an environmental review process to decide on regular timber sales, but frequently encounters legal opposition from environmental lawyers.
