GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WATE) - Over a year since requesting communications from the National Park Service, 1,175 documents were sent to WATE 6 On Your Side detailing the period between November 23 to December 5, 2016.
The documents include preliminary weather reports, emails, and texts between National Park Service officials.
In some text message screenshots, Fire Management Officer Greg Salansky writes, "The plan is to monitor and hope it does not come that far," referring to the fire moving locations.
Other messages between park officials show conversations about the terrain.
In one message an official writes, "My folks don't want to venture out" because of the steep terrain.
Weather reports include daily updates by the National Weather Service.
