California Wildfire: Smoke advisory issued for entire Bay Area

Smoke from Thursday’s Camp Fire in the foothills near Chico is drifting across the Bay Area, but officials in Napa and Sonoma counties said there is no local danger of the fire spreading at this point.

Officials for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued a smoke advisory for Thursday and Friday, but they noted that conditions in the Bay Area currently do not exceed federal air quality standards.

High winds are carrying the smoke southwest from the fire, according to a Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office alert. Parts of the Bay Area are under a red-flag warning, which cautions people about increased wildfire risks, through 7 a.m. Friday.

Low humidity levels and offshore winds blowing hot air inland, combined with dried out vegetation, could cause any wildfires that spark to spread quickly.

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. officials said Wednesday that they are monitoring weather updates for nine counties in Northern California. The utility is considering preemptively shutting off electricity to keep downed power lines from starting a blaze.

People can expect to see hazy skies and smell smoke over the next two days, officials said.
