Australia's wildfires have claimed a 25th victim. The body of a 71-year-old man was found on his property in New South Wales' South Coast Monday, police confirmed in a statement.

The latest: A new team of American firefighters has arrived to help tackle fires in NSW, as some 3,000 Defense Force Reservists have joined the Australian Defense Force in assisting with fire operations, Prime Minister Scott Morrison told reporters.

The state of play: Lower temperatures and rainfall have brought relief to Victoria and NSW.

In New South Wales, state Premier Gladys Berejiklian told a news conference there's "no room for complacency," as NSW Rural Fire Service commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said the rain wouldn't put the largest and most dangerous bushfires out.

In Victoria, state emergency management commissioner Andrew Crisp told reporters that while conditions for firefighters had improved, the weather "will warm up" and the fires "will take off again."

In Canberra, smoke from the wildfires is choking the Australian Capital Territory. Poor air quality caused the Australian federal department responsible for managing emergencies to close its office there Monday.

The impact: Since September, Australia's bushfires have claimed the lives of 19 people in New South Wales, three in Victoria and three in South Australia, per Morrison.

  • More than 1,500 homes have been lost, Morrison noted. Tens of thousands of acres of forest land and national parks have burned.

Government response: The prime minister, who's faced criticism for his leadership during the bushfire crisis, said his government was investing an additional AU$2 billion ($1.4 billion) to help fire-devastated communities rebuild, and he promised more if needed.

  • The newly created National Bushfire Recovery Agency has already begun work, he said.
