Fire at Kountry Kitchen Soul Food Place on near northside under investigation - IndyStar

The popular Kountry Kitchen Soul Food Place is closed after an early-morning fire Saturday, though the extent of the damage is not yet known.

A call to Indianapolis Fire Department came around midnight, according to a news release, sending firefighters to the north-side restaurant at 1831 N. College Avenue at 12:07 a.m. Firefighters gained control of the fire around 1:30 a.m.

No injuries were reported. An employee told IFD that the last worker left around 9:30 p.m. the night before.

Kountry Kitchen, a well-known soul food restaurant, has been dishing out plates of pork chops, fried chicken and black-eyed peas for more than 30 years.

The restaurant has long been a staple in the Kennedy King neighborhood, serving as a destination for politicians and the occasional celebrity sighting.

For more than decade, thousands of people have been given free hot meals on Christmas mornings.

Just a few weeks ago, Mayor Joe Hogsett and his wife, Steph Hogsett, joined other volunteers who filled plates, handed out toys and made sure neighbors had enough blankets and warm clothes for the winter.

IFD said early Saturday that the fire remains under investigation.
