FITCHBURG — The Massachusetts Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a two-alarm house fire at 14 Highland Ave. that killed two people early Sunday morning.
Fitchburg Fire Chief Kevin Roy confirmed two men who were pulled from the blaze and transported to the Leominster campus of UMass Memorial HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital later died from their injuries.
Fitchburg Deputy Fire Chief Mitchell Pinault said on Sunday that firefighters were dispatched to the single-family house at about 12:35 a.m. Pinault said the fire was brought under control after a half hour with assistance from firefighters from Leominster and Lunenburg. The deputy chief said that, aside from the two victims, nobody else was in the building at the time of the fire.
The Fire Marshal’s Office said a Tier 1 hazmat response was needed to address a reported “acrid smell” believed to be caused by chemicals in an unused photography lab in the house. The office also noted that there appeared to be no smoke alarms in the house.
The Fire Marshal’s Office and the Worcester District Attorney’s Office are jointly conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire. While both offices are focusing on an overloaded power strip as the possible cause, the investigation is ongoing.
According to Fitchburg property records, the home is owned by Franklin Wilson III.
