(ANSAmed) - MILAN, OCTOBER 3 - Mediterranean Europe risks a
sharp increase in the number of wildfires by the end of the
century due to climate change, according to a study published on
the magazine Nature Communications by the research group of
Italian climatologist Marco Turco of the University of
Barcelona, in cooperation with the Institute of geosciences and
georesources of the National Research Center in Pisa. The areas
affected by fires could increase by 40 to 100%, mainly in Spain,
according to the research. In order to avoid such a scenario, it
would be necessary to contain global worming within 1.5 degrees,
as provided for by the Paris climate agreement.
Researchers have analyzed the scenario. The results show that
an increase in temperatures of 1.5 degrees could determine an
increase by 40% of areas devastated by fires, especially in
Spain. With an increase of 3 degrees, the areas affected by
fires could grow by 100%.
''These results, combined with the recent increase in the
exposure to large wildfires, should induce us to reconsider
current management strategies'', explained Marco Turco, the
first author of the study. ''The effects of climate change could
exceed efforts to prevent fires, which means we should work
harder in the near future''.(ANSAmed).
